Overview
Robot Wars made homemade, remote-controlled machines the stars of a television competition.
Contestants guided their robots through mechanical challenges and arena battles, where armour, weapons and driving skill shaped the result.
The scheduled 18 October 1998 edition was hosted by Jeremy Clarkson and Philippa Forrester, with commentary by Jonathan Pearce. In 2016, BBC Two commissioned six 60-minute episodes in a purpose-built Glasgow arena.
Why It Mattered
The programme turned engineering into visible entertainment: armour, weapons and driving skill shaped the result in the arena. It also gave amateur builders a televised stage, linking team identities and homemade engineering to the machines’ performance.
