The Voynich Manuscript

Forgotten Mysteries · 1475–1600

Published

The Voynich Manuscript is a richly illustrated book that nobody has been able to read with certainty. Formally catalogued by Yale as Beinecke MS 408, it is written in an unidentified script and filled with botanical, astronomical, biological, cosmological and pharmaceutical-looking imagery. Its unknown author produced it in Central Europe around the end of the fifteenth or during the sixteenth century.

Why It Mattered

Its mystery rests inside a real and substantial surviving object, not merely a later legend. The writing, illustrations and physical construction invite interpretation, yet the manuscript still withholds its language, purpose and author after generations of study.

Physical record

- The catalogue describes 102 parchment folios plus one paper leaf, including multiple foldouts. - Yale catalogues the manuscript under the formal shelfmark MS 408. - Pages carry ink drawings with coloured washes and an unidentified script.

Illustrated sections

- Yale groups the contents into botanical, astronomical or astrological, biological, cosmological, pharmaceutical and continuous-text sections. - The library cautions that image-based interpretations do not establish the text's meaning.

Custody

- Wilfrid Voynich acquired the manuscript in 1912 from the Jesuit College at Frascati. - H. P. Kraus gave it to the Beinecke Library in 1969.
