Defining Feature

SMS reference number for Wednesday two-for-one cinema tickets at participating cinemas

Status

Discontinued - Continued as EE Wednesdays before ending on 25 February 2015

Overview

Orange Wednesdays let customers claim two cinema tickets for the price of one at participating cinemas.

Orange announced the scheme with the UK film industry on 26 November 2003, and the public promotion began in late March or early April 2004. Customers requested a unique reference number by text and presented it at a cinema.

The offer was renewed in 2007, expanded to registered Orange internet customers and continued as EE Wednesdays after the brand transition. Its final day was 25 February 2015.

Why It Mattered

Orange Wednesdays turned mobile membership into a recurring leisure benefit rather than a one-off discount. Its simple weekly format connected the phone network with cinema-going across much of the UK.

Campaign reported participation at more than 94% of UK cinemas in 2007, helping the promotion survive renewal and the transition from Orange to EE.

Text Redemption

  • By 2007, customers texted “FILM” to 241 for a unique reference number.
  • The reference number secured two tickets for the price of one on a Wednesday.

Participation and Conditions

  • Campaign reported participation at more than 94% of UK cinemas in 2007.
  • Participating venues, exclusions, formats and advance-booking conditions varied over time.

Renewal and Brand Transition

  • The offer was renewed in 2007 and extended to registered Orange internet customers.
  • It continued as EE Wednesdays before ending on 25 February 2015.
