Recurring comic character used in Embassy Regal cigarette advertising

Status

Discontinued - December 1993

Overview

“Reg” was a recurring comic character in British billboard advertising for Embassy Regal cigarettes.

Associated with Imperial Tobacco, the campaign was active by 22 October 1992. Reg served as its continuing character device across the advertising.

The campaign ended in December 1993 after a Health Education Authority complaint and advice or a request from the Advertising Standards Authority. A Welsh snooker promotion already under way was excepted from the wider discontinuation.

Why It Mattered

The campaign became a significant tobacco-advertising controversy because research found its strongest appeal among teenagers rather than its stated adult audience.

Its withdrawal showed how evidence about audience response could bring an advertising campaign to an end even without a formal finding that the code had been breached.

Billboard Campaign

  • A Commons debate on 22 October 1992 described Reg as the character leading Regal’s billboard campaign.

Audience Reception Study

  • A 1994 BMJ study used surveys of 5,451 schoolchildren aged 11–15, 437 children aged 5–10 and 814 people aged 15–65, alongside discussion groups.
  • The study found the campaign’s greatest appeal among teenagers, especially smokers aged 14–15.
  • Its stated adult target group of 35–55 was comparatively unappreciative.

Complaint and Withdrawal

  • The Health Education Authority complained about the campaign.
  • The Media Leader reported on 15 December 1993 that the ASA found no formal code breach but advised against further use and requested discontinuation.
  • Parliamentary records say Imperial Tobacco discontinued Reg in advertisements in December 1993, except for a Welsh snooker promotion already under way.
