Overview

Smiths brought Cheetos to Britain in 1990 with Chester Cheetah fronting a cartoon-led television campaign.

The sunglasses-wearing mascot appeared amid stylised Hollywood scenery, with “New Cheetos” introducing Puffs and Crunchy packs. The closing line, “It’s not easy being cheesy,” carried the character’s swagger into the product pitch.

The launch struggled, and Marketing Week later reported a withdrawal in 1992. That was the end of this attempt rather than the brand’s final British appearance: further relaunches followed in 1998 and 2000, with another distribution initiative in 2015.

Why It Mattered

Chester made a snack launch into a character performance. His sunglasses, attitude and Hollywood setting gave the British campaign a recognisable American identity before the closing shot returned attention to the packets. The initial withdrawal shows why the advert’s survival in memory should be kept separate from the commercial life of that particular launch.

Launch Advert Identity

  • TV Whirl catalogues the advert as “Cheetos - 1990” and links it to the UK launch attempt.
  • The advert identity is described there as “It Aint Easy Being Cheesy.”
  • The visible endboard reads: “It’s not easy being cheesy.”

Packs on Screen

  • The opening title card reads “New Cheetos Presents.”
  • Surviving frames show Cheetos Puffs and Cheetos Crunchy.
  • The endboard shows Chester Cheetah on both displayed packs.

British Timeline

  • Smiths introduced Cheetos to the UK in 1990; the initial attempt ended in withdrawal in 1992, as reported by Marketing Week.
  • Later UK activity included reported relaunches in 1998 and 2000, plus a distribution initiative reported in 2015.
