Bionicle

Forgotten Toys · 2001

Published

LEGO introduced Bionicle in 2001 as a world of mechanical heroes that children could build themselves. The six original Toa Mata used Technic elements, articulated limbs and removable masks, with each figure tied to a different element and identity. Books, comics, films, television and games extended their story far beyond the pieces inside each box.

Why It Mattered

Bionicle made construction and storytelling inseparable. A figure was both a working toy and a character within a continuing mythology, giving individual sets meaning as parts of a much larger world.

Constructable figures

- Bionicle figures were built from LEGO Technic elements and used articulated joints. - LEGO's archive also preserves a 401-piece Bionicle construction set from 2001. - The six 2001 Toa Mata figures each represented a natural element and carried a Kanohi mask.

Story system

- LEGO carried Bionicle's lore through comics, books, films, television series and video games. - Even the original canister packaging was incorporated into the story as the Toa's arrival vessels.

Recorded product history

- LEGO's 2001 annual report listed Bionicle among the product series that contributed strongly to that year's sharp sales rise. - LEGO records the original line ending in 2010 and a separate revival running from 2015 to 2016.
