Robot Wars

Forgotten TV & Film · 1998

Published

Robot Wars made homemade machines the stars of a television competition. Contestants brought remote-controlled robots into mechanical challenges and arena battles where armour, weapons and driving skill could decide which machine survived. When BBC Two revived the programme in 2016, more powerful robots entered a purpose-built Glasgow arena.

Why It Mattered

The programme turned engineering into visible entertainment: every spinner, flipper and improvised repair had an immediate consequence in the arena. It also gave amateur builders a national stage, allowing viewers to follow the personalities of both the teams and the machines they created.

1998 format

- The BBC's 18 October 1998 listing described contestants guiding robot warriors through mechanical challenges. - That scheduled edition was hosted by Jeremy Clarkson and Philippa Forrester with commentary by Jonathan Pearce.

Arena competition

- The 2016 commission put teams of amateur roboteers into battles for the Robot Wars title. - The Glasgow production used a new purpose-built arena and cameras intended to capture crushing, sawing and scorching action.

BBC revival

- BBC Two ordered six 60-minute episodes with more robots, battles and science. - The revival was produced by Mentorn Media Scotland in association with SJP Media.
