Overview
My Meebas was a Mattel virtual-pet toy that hid a surprise plush inside a tall electronic tube.
Released in 2008, each unit used three buttons and a movable LCD screen. Players cared for the on-screen creature, earned hearts and guided it through seven evolution levels before unlocking the option to open the tube and reveal the plush.
The line came in six tube themes: Happiness, Luck, Love, Intelligence, Beauty and Friendship. My Meebas had documented US availability and a UK Christmas promotion, then was discontinued in 2009.
Why It Mattered
My Meebas gave the virtual-pet formula a physical reward, making the time spent caring for a digital creature part of the anticipation of discovering a real toy. Unlike virtual pets built around repeated care, its concealed plush gave players a tangible milestone to work towards.
The design reflected the late-2000s market for interactive electronic toys, combining digital progression, collectibility and surprise reveals. Its inclusion in the UK's 2008 Dream Toys TechZone list shows that the concept attracted retail attention, although the original product line proved short-lived.
Power and Post-Reveal Play
- The electronic unit required two AAA batteries.
- Mattel recommended the toy for ages six and over.
- Electronic games remained playable after the plush was revealed, although Mattel described gameplay with the tube open as limited. The tube had to be closed before the reset button could be used.
What the Themes Meant
- Happiness, Luck, Love, Intelligence, Beauty and Friendship were official tube identities, not a verified list of plush species.
- The plush’s shape and colour were intended to remain secret until the tube was opened.
- A definitive total number of plush designs and their complete distribution have not been established.
Documented Market Trail
- On 15 October 2008, the UK Dream Toys announcement placed My Meebas in its TechZone Top 12 Toys for Christmas with a £16.99 RRP.
- A US trade-directory listing added on 24 September 2008 reported an average price of $19.99; that listing date was not a formal launch date.
- Mattel’s international instruction sheet listed support contacts across several territories, but those contacts do not establish retail availability in each one.
- Mattel’s product-support record says replacement parts are unavailable.
