Overview
QQ Pet (QQ宠物) was Tencent’s QQ-linked desktop virtual-pet service, centred on an on-screen penguin.
Tested and launched in 2005, it accompanied ordinary computer use in mainland China. Players fed, cleaned and developed their pet within the QQ desktop environment.
In 2018, Tencent announced a staged ending: registrations and payments were to stop on 5 July, game operations on 15 September, and the support website and forum on 30 September.
Why It Mattered
QQ Pet brought virtual-pet care into the everyday experience of using a computer in China. Rather than requiring a separate gaming session, its penguin could accompany QQ users as they chatted, worked and browsed, turning routine desktop activity into an ongoing relationship with a digital character.
Its 2018 shutdown also marked the disappearance of a distinctive part of China's early social-internet culture. The surviving screenshots and retirement notices preserve its appearance and final days, but cannot fully recreate the experience of keeping a virtual companion on the desktop.
Testing and Launch
- Tencent disclosed closed-beta testing during the first quarter of 2005.
- Tencent’s company history records a 2005 launch, but no exact public-launch day is established.
Operator and Geographic Scope
- Tencent is identified as the corporate creator and operator; no responsible studio, product lead or individual designer is identified.
- Mainland China is the documented market and QQ operating context, not an established development birthplace or specific first-launch location.
Staged Shutdown Record
- The QQ Pet project team dated its staged shutdown notice 29 June 2018; the text survives in a PingWest reproduction rather than a retrieved official forum page.
- The timetable set 15 September for the end of game operations, and a same-day report reproduced an in-game retirement notice; no server log fixes the final connection time.
- The timetable set 30 September for closure of the support website and forum, but completion of that deadline was not independently observed.
