Overview

Crusha’s “Gym Kittens” television commercial sent cut-out-style cats through a hectic gym workout.

A lead kitten in a leotard appeared among cats exercising and pumping iron. The execution was publicly described in Britain in March 2008, and Eye later credited it to Joel Veitch; Rathergood says it made the commercial and names CST as agency.

The first and final transmission dates remain unknown. A later Crusha treatment replaced the low-fi cut-out look with cats in a cooking-show kitchen, though the change is undated.

Why It Mattered

The commercial brought Joel Veitch’s surreal internet-kitten animation style into mainstream British television advertising. Its deliberately rough cut-out cats, absurd gym routines and chaotic humour stood apart from the polished character animation commonly associated with food and drink campaigns.

It also captured a moment when the visual language of early internet comedy was entering traditional advertising. Contemporary criticism and later accounts by Veitch document that crossover, preserving an example of how online animation influenced the appearance and humour of a television commercial.

Gym Kittens Credits

  • Eye’s 9 September 2008 caption identifies the frame as the “Gym kittens” advert for Crusha by Joel Veitch.
  • Rathergood’s exact-execution page says Rathergood made the commercial and names CST as agency.
  • A separate generic Crusha page credits WTCS for an unspecified commercial, so that credit cannot be assigned to “Gym Kittens”.

Broadcast Record and Survival

  • Peter York’s review is dated 29 March 2008, while Eye’s article is dated 9 September 2008.
  • Those dates document the execution during 2008 but do not establish its first or final television transmission.
  • No authenticated original broadcast master or transmission copy has been confirmed, and surviving online videos have not been verified as complete or unaltered.
  • No regulator decision in the listed records supports claims that the commercial was banned.

Later Crusha Cat Treatments

  • Springetts described giving the character Errol a larger role on Crusha packaging in 2011; that work is separate from production of the television animation.
  • Birdbox describes a later treatment that placed cats and Errol in a cooking-show kitchen instead of the low-fi cut-out setting.
  • Birdbox’s portfolio does not date the transition to the kitchen treatment.

  • The internet loves kittens — Direct eyewitness account of Joel Veitch’s D&AD Xchange presentation, quotations and identified Gym kittens frame read. Author was chairing the event; reported creator speech distinguished from a complete original talk transcript.
  • Peter York On Ads: We’re back to adorable animals — via gangsta rap and hoodies — Contemporary critic’s direct description and personal assessment of gym advert read. His jokes about creator age are satire, not biographical facts; wider social commentary is not treated as evidence of reception.
  • CRUSHA — Animation participant describes later kitchen campaign and retained Errol character directly. Copyright footer 2024 is not a production date. TV/cinema transition not assigned an exact date without contemporary record.

Caption

Crusha’s gym kittens brought Joel Veitch’s rough internet-animation style into a television commercial documented in 2008. This period frame survives with Eye’s account of the creator discussing the move from viral films into paid advertising.
