Defining Feature

A pinstriped butler mascot balloon flown in New York’s Thanksgiving parade

Status

Retired after the 2004 parade; no later appearances recorded. Disposition of the balloon itself undocumented.

Overview

The Ask Jeeves mascot balloon carried the internet butler above New York’s Thanksgiving parade.

ABC listed Jeeves among the balloons on 23 November 2000. Contemporary reporting described the 2002 parade as his third balloon appearance, following flights in 2000 and 2001. A 2004 report confirmed he last participated in 2002 before returning that year; a photograph shows him passing through Times Square on 25 November 2004.

The balloon was separate from the 16-foot, ground-based Jeeves sculpture on a float in the 1999 parade. Ask Jeeves supported the 2002 flight with billboard and phone-booth advertising on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. The balloon did not appear in 2003; contemporary reporting linked the gap to limited marketing spending. Its 25 November 2004 flight was its last recorded parade appearance. The balloon’s physical disposition after that date is undocumented.

Why It Mattered

The Ask Jeeves balloon transformed an internet search mascot into a giant public advertisement, bringing a digital-era brand into one of America's most recognisable annual events. Its appearance above Manhattan gave the illustrated butler a physical presence far beyond computer screens.

The balloon and the accompanying outdoor campaign connected the search service with audiences away from their computers.

Documented Parade Appearances

  • ABC listed Jeeves among the balloons in the 23 November 2000 parade, but did not describe the appearance as a debut.
  • InternetNews described the November 2002 parade as the balloon’s third appearance; the sequence indicates flights in 2000, 2001 and 2002. The San Francisco Chronicle confirmed in 2004 that Jeeves last participated in 2002.
  • The Bridge and Tunnel Club gallery photographs the balloon in Times Square on 25 November 2004.

Reported Form and Earlier Display

  • InternetNews reported in 2002 that the balloon was 70 feet long and 25 feet wide; these are reported figures rather than measurements from construction drawings.
  • Salon’s 1999 report described a separate 16-foot Jeeves sculpture seated on a ground-based float among oversized books, not the later helium balloon.

Character Design and Later Fate

  • The San Francisco Chronicle identified Marcos Sorensen as the illustrated Jeeves character’s creator and said he was helping design the 2004 balloon.
  • That report does not establish sole balloon authorship, and no fabricator or manufacturing site has been identified.
  • The balloon was absent in 2003; the San Francisco Chronicle linked the pause to limited marketing spending, not to a documented Macy’s rotation rule. Its photographed 2004 flight is the last documented parade appearance. The balloon’s later physical disposition is unknown.
