Overview
Sun Fizz was a fictional orange drink and animated sun mascot created for a 1998 Sprite advert.
The yellow, bow-tied character appears in a cheerful family drink setup, then the scene turns into a chase as the family flees from it. The final branding reveals Sprite as the advertiser.
Directors’ Library catalogues the advert as a United States creative under May 1998 and attributes it to Spike Jonze and MJZ, although the month is not confirmed as its first broadcast.
Why It Mattered
Sun Fizz played on the reassuring world of family-friendly soft-drink advertising, turning a smiling cartoon mascot into something unexpectedly menacing. What began like an ordinary cheerful commercial became a surreal chase, with the Sprite reveal exposing the entire setup as a joke at conventional advertising's expense.
Its humour came from that sudden reversal. The exaggerated friendliness, bright animation and increasingly unsettling behaviour made the fictional Sun Fizz brand feel memorable in its own right, even though the drink never existed. The advert captured a late-1990s taste for irreverent advertising that deliberately undermined familiar commercial formulas.

The fictional Sun Fizz mascot promised a familiar cheerful drink advert. Sprite’s 1998 film turned that expectation into a chase, making the family flee from the character rather than welcome it.
