Overview
Boddingtons’ Cream of Manchester campaign made the beer’s foamy head the centre of the joke.
From July 1991, magazine back covers recast the pint or can through ice cream, sun cream, piping bags, whips and shaving imagery. Television later added performers, dialogue and comic switches of place, carrying Manchester accents and identity into a national campaign.
The first television date remains disputed, but the original phase had given way to the Chilled Cream cartoon-cow work by around 1999; the beer brand itself continued.
Why It Mattered
At a time when Boddingtons was being positioned beyond its North West base, the campaign treated regional specificity as an asset rather than something to smooth away for a national audience. Its glamorous parodies could turn Venice into Manchester and Miami into Blackpool, making the collision between aspirational beer advertising and northern dialogue the joke.
Campaign Chronology
- A reproduced effectiveness summary dates the targeted national magazine campaign to July 1991 and identifies outside back covers as its consistent placement.
- Accounts conflict over whether Cream of Manchester television advertising began in 1991, 1992 or nearly two years after the press launch; regional and national schedules were not recovered.
- By around 1999, the original campaign phase had given way to the Chilled Cream cartoon-cow work. This was a change in advertising, not the end of Boddingtons beer.
Creative Work and Preservation
- The Science Museum Group catalogues sixteen campaign posters and five named television-advertisement VHS items.
- Face Cream and Ice Cream were television executions rather than entries in the catalogued group of sixteen posters.
- Participant testimony credits Mike Wells and Tom Hudson with the originating print concept and describes John Hegarty’s oversight; complete official personnel credits have not been recovered.
Awards and Reported Growth
- Confirmed honours include two 1993 D&AD Wood Pencils for UK Press & Outdoor, a 1993 British Arrows Bronze for Face Cream and a 1994 IPA Effectiveness Gold.
- The Independent reported annual production rising from 200,000 to 500,000 barrels by 1993, with more than half of sales coming from outside the North West.
- A reproduced effectiveness summary reported 250 per cent sales growth outside Granada during the press-led first two years, while other accounts also pointed to packaging and stronger distribution.
