Overview

Professor Wonder promoted fortified Wonder Bread in a 2000 campaign linking calcium to children’s minds.

The campaign included separate adverts highlighting added calcium and folic acid. In the calcium advert, a girl ate a sandwich before being sent to do her homework, while animated neurons sprang into action. Professor Wonder linked calcium to better brain function and memory.

The FTC alleged that manufacturer Interstate Bakeries and advertising agency Campbell Mithun lacked adequate evidence for those claims. Separate consent orders in 2002 required scientific substantiation for specified future representations about bread products and their ingredients.

Why It Mattered

The campaign went beyond telling parents what nutrients the bread contained: it suggested what eating it could do for their children. Its playful animation carried a claim about mental performance that required evidence. The FTC’s action also placed responsibility on the agency that created the advertising, showing that substantiation was a concern for both the brand and its creative partner.

The “Neurons” Advert

  • The FTC complaint describes a 30-second Professor Wonder commercial in which Missy eats a Wonder Bread sandwich after her brain’s neurons are shown as tired.
  • The storyboard then shows lively neurons, a homework scene and statements linking calcium with better-working minds and remembering things.
  • FTC-hosted exhibits preserve the “New :30 Wonder Television Commercial ‘Neurons’” storyboard, including Professor Wonder, Wonder Bread packaging and brain imagery.

Campaign and Distribution

  • Supermarket News reported on 21 August 2000 that Interstate Bakeries had launched the Professor Wonder fortification campaign.
  • The report described one advert claiming “200% more calcium than regular enriched bread” and a separate folic-acid spot.
  • The Interstate complaint says Wonder Bread advertising was disseminated through cable channels, broadcast stations and the internet.

Separate FTC Orders

  • Interstate Bakeries Corporation was Docket C-4042; its advertising agency, Campbell Mithun LLC, was separately named in Docket C-4043.
  • The FTC issued final Decision and Orders for both respondents on 16 April 2002.
  • The orders required competent and reliable scientific evidence for specified Wonder Bread representations about calcium, cognition and memory.
