RadioShack

Forgotten Shops · 1921–2015

Published

RadioShack placed electronics, cables, components and accessories inside thousands of relatively small local shops. Founded in 1921, the chain operated 4,297 company-owned US stores in 2013 before filing for Chapter 11 protection in February 2015. Its shelves covered both finished devices and the small parts needed to connect, repair or experiment with them.

Why It Mattered

It gave consumers a nearby place to solve the awkward physical problems of technology: finding the right plug, battery, adapter, wire or replacement component. That dense store network made specialised electronics feel locally accessible before online retail made obscure parts searchable from home.
