Overview
Woolworths brought a broad mix of everyday goods together beneath one familiar British high-street name.
The first British store opened at 25–25A Church Street, Liverpool, in 1909. A replacement opened across the street in 1923, and later branches included broad sales floors, cafés and staff areas.
The chain spread through towns across the country before its stores closed during the winter of 2008–2009. Historic England’s branch records document Blackpool’s closure in December 2008 and Bridgnorth’s in January 2009.
Why It Mattered
Woolworths was more than a single type of shop: its broad range gave people reasons to visit for different parts of everyday life.
Repeated shopfronts and interiors made the chain a recognisable feature of British high streets until its later branch closures.
