Lighthouse keepers James Ducat, Thomas Marshall and Donald McArthur disappeared from the Flannan Isles in December 1900. When the tender Hesperus reached the island on 26 December, nobody answered its signals and the lighthouse station was empty. The men had completed routine work earlier in the month, but no confirmed account explains how all three were lost.
Why It Mattered
The disappearance turned an isolated workplace into one of Britain’s enduring maritime mysteries. Official correspondence captures the immediate search and concern for the families, while the absence of witnesses left later generations to build stories around a small number of surviving clues.
The missing keepers
- James Ducat was principal keeper, Thomas Marshall was second assistant and Donald McArthur was serving as occasional keeper.
- The work recorded for 15 December had been completed, but the light was not observed that night.
Discovery on 26 December
- The lighthouse tender Hesperus made its routine visit on 26 December 1900.
- After whistles and a rocket produced no response, relief keeper Joseph Moore landed and found the station empty but the light-room equipment in order.
Official investigation
- Damage and displaced equipment were found around the west landing, including material stored well above sea level.
- Superintendent Robert Muirhead concluded on 8 January 1901 that the keepers had probably gone near the west landing and been swept away by an unexpectedly large roller.
- National Records of Scotland identifies the related correspondence and reports under record series NLC3/1/1.
