Tetley Tea Folk

Forgotten Collectibles · 1990s

Published

For years, the Tetley Tea Folk were familiar faces on British television: Gaffer, Sydney, Maurice, Clarence, Gordon, Tina and Archie, forever gathered around the tea table. Their popularity eventually carried them beyond the adverts and into people’s homes as collectable figures. Surviving examples include a Music Stars range featuring characters such as Gaffer and Archie, produced for Lyons Tetley.

Why It Mattered

The Tea Folk were more than advertising mascots. After appearing on television for years, they felt like familiar characters—and the figures gave people a small piece of that world to keep. Today, memories of the Tetley figures are sometimes mixed up with the Wade figurines given away with Red Rose Tea in North America. They were separate collections connected to different tea brands.

Development & Construction

- “Tetley Tea Folk” was the name of Tetley’s seven-character advertising property. - Campaign reported in August 1997 that the Tea Folk had been television advertising stars for 24 years. This record therefore does not treat 1997 as their first documentation or origin date. - Stockton-on-Tees Libraries separately catalogues a “Tetley Tea Folk Music Stars Gaffer figurine” and a “Tetley Tea Folk Music Stars Archie (Gaffer’s nephew) figurine.”

Collectible Evidence & Attribution

- “Tetley Tea Folk Music Stars” is the documented collectible sub-line in the available institutional catalogue. - The Stockton catalogue attributes its Gaffer and Archie Music Stars figurines to Lyons Tetley, Greenford. - Marketplace photographs of miniature buildings and ornamental teapots are included as supporting visual references.

Distribution, Distinction & Current Status

- Do not conflate Tetley Tea Folk with Red Rose Tea Wade figurines. Red Rose states that its Wade figures began in 1967 and became recurring inclusions in American Red Rose Tea packages. - Historical advertising collectibles
