Overview
Boxxy was Catherine “Catie” Wayne’s internet persona, known for energetic, exaggerated webcam videos.
Made for online friends, the videos moved through Gaia Online, YouTube and anonymous imageboards during 2008 and 2009. Re-uploads helped them travel beyond their original audience.
On 4chan, Boxxy divided viewers into supporters and opponents. The dispute escalated into attempts to identify Wayne and compromise her accounts, and she later addressed hostility toward the character on her ANewHopeee channel.
Why It Mattered
Boxxy showed how amateur webcam performance could become a cross-border online event through reposting, audience interpretation and conflict rather than a conventional media launch. Coverage and discussion stretched across American online platforms and press in the United Kingdom, Canada and Italy.
Deleted uploads, re-uploads and account interference also left an unusually fragmented digital history scattered across the web.
Visual Presentation
- Recognisable markers included heavy black eyeliner, a side-swept fringe and fixed webcam framing.
Early Circulation
- January 2008 is the reported period for the original friend-directed Gaia Online and YouTube videos.
- A Boxxy video was shared on I-Am-Bored on 27 December 2008 before circulating to 4chan.
- The Boxxybabee account re-uploaded material on 8 January 2009.
- A further Boxxy video followed on 9 January 2009.
Conflict and Later Activity
- Discussion on 4chan’s /b/ board developed into a supporter-versus-opponent conflict in January 2009.
- Reporting on the dispute documented a denial-of-service incident that temporarily disrupted 4chan.
- Wayne used the ANewHopeee channel for a 2013 video addressing public hostility toward Boxxy.
