Fistful of Aliens

Forgotten Toys · 1998

Published

Fistful of Aliens was a YES! Entertainment collectible toy-miniatures line built around colourful alien figures, Space Pods, vehicles and playsets. Each character had its own attributes, turning the collection into a simple strategic battle game where figures could be compared and used against one another rather than simply collected.

Why It Mattered

Fistful of Aliens gave small collectible figures more purpose than simply completing a set. The faction match-ups and power values turned them into a lightweight battle game, while playsets and mail-away rewards encouraged children to keep expanding the collection. It is a good example of the late-1990s trend for toys that blurred the line between collecting, gaming and promotional loyalty schemes.

Faction Battle System

- Dredrocks beat Gangreens through strength; Gangreens neutralised Bluspews with slime; Bluspews melted Dredrocks with acid. - Figures from the same faction or colour were resolved by comparing the power values printed beneath their feet. - Additional classes included Mutants, metallic RAMMs, Crystallites, SciRoids, Jangutz Khan and the Elemental.

Capture Jangutz Khan Promotion

- Battle Packs earned 1 point, Space Pod Packs 2, War Packs 3 and the SciRoid Battleship Playset 6. - Rewards ranged from an Alien Mini Pack at 3 points to a die-cast hand-painted Jangutz Khan and T-shirt at 16 points. - The promotion was scheduled to end on 30 March 1999 or when supplies ran out; orders were due by 30 April 1999.

Series and Product Formats

- The line included collectible figures, Space Pods, playsets and other battle-oriented products. - Two series were released, with a third series planned but unreleased. - The trademark application covered toy figures, vehicles, weapons, action figures, playsets and a strategic war game.
