Commodore announced the Amiga CD32 at London’s Science Museum on 16 July 1993. The Amiga-derived, keyboardless CD-ROM console reached the UK in September 1993, although no exact first retail day is securely established.

Its reported £299 launch proposition paired a television-oriented multimedia pitch with two games and twin controllers. The machine offered 2 MB RAM, AGA graphics, a 14 MHz 68020-family processor, game and audio-CD playback, and optional MPEG-1 Full Motion Video capability.

Why It Mattered

Its significance lies in an attempt to carry Amiga technology into the emerging CD-ROM console market in a self-contained form for the television.

That opportunity was cut short when Commodore International entered its liquidation process in April 1994, leaving the platform with too little time to develop a mature commercial life.
