Pillsbury Toaster Pockets
Forgotten Adverts · 1997
Published
Pillsbury Toaster Pockets were frozen savoury pastries designed to be heated in a domestic toaster and aimed at UK consumers aged 10–16. Their television campaign appeared by late January 1997 and featured Harry Enfield as Kevin the Teenager.
The reported 40-second launch commercial ran on ITV, Channel 4 and Sky. Set in Kevin’s family kitchen, it built the product demonstration around his familiar teenage strop before closing with the Pillsbury Doughboy.
Why It Mattered
The campaign’s cultural distinction came from pairing a new toaster snack with Kevin the Teenager, an established British television character familiar to the intended teenage audience. This gave an unfamiliar product an immediately recognisable comic identity.
Enfield refined the script with Lowe Howard-Spink and directed the Tiger Aspect production. That involvement made the advert a notable extension of his character work into commercial production.
