Pot Noodle’s “Faffy Food” Campaign

Forgotten Adverts · 1995–1996

In 1995, Pot Noodle introduced Terry and John: two blokes filming each other on what looked like a badly handled home camcorder. Terry had one main complaint — healthy, fibrous food was pointless “faffy food”.

The deliberately cheap look was the joke: a sofa, a leaflet about fibre, John’s thumb drifting into shot, and Terry angrily defending instant noodles. The characters caught on with a student audience, generating catchphrases, fan mail and live appearances. In 1996, Terry’s anti-health-food worldview expanded into a rivalry with the wholesome Ned Noodle.

Why It Mattered

These adverts made Pot Noodle feel like it belonged to a particular mid-1990s youth culture: scruffy, knowingly stupid and aggressively uninterested in being good for you.

What began as a strange little camcorder sketch became a larger campaign across adverts, promotions and public appearances. Terry’s line was never an official campaign name, but it captures the whole thing neatly.

Broadcast and Visual Style

  • The initial television run began in late September 1995. A complete transmission history has not been established.
  • TVARK catalogues a surviving 4:3 colour ITV recording dated 20 January 1996, documenting a transmission rather than the advert’s debut.
  • The first documented execution used an inept domestic-camcorder look, with a modest living room, grey sofa, fibre leaflet or poster and John’s thumb intruding into the shot.
  • Reports variously transcribed Terry’s wording as “faffy”, “faffey” or “flinny”, so “faffy food” should not be treated as a definitive transcript without a master recording.

Terry, Ned and the Wider Promotion

  • During 1996, Terry’s anti-health-food stance was set against the wholesome Ned Noodle across television, promotion, public relations and live activity.
  • The wider campaign included the League Against Fibrous Lies, leaflets, posters and appearances in health clubs and shopping centres.
  • By September 1996, reported offers included a wall clock for six Pot Noodle lids plus £7.99, fridge magnets for six lids plus £1.99 and a tea towel for five lids plus £1.99.
  • Marketing Week’s 1998 case history attributed a teenage awareness index of 35, a purchase-intention rise among “gatekeeper” mothers from 3.09 to 4.22 on a five-point scale, and approximately £7 million in additional short-term sales to the developed Terry-and-Ned platform.
