Esso Tiger Tokens

The Esso Collection gave British motorists Tiger Tokens to save and exchange for catalogue gifts. From November 1986, participating Esso stations generally issued one token for every £6 spent on fuel. Motorists could combine vouchers from different stations, exchange lower-value totals immediately or order costlier rewards; the range ran from a three-token china mug to gifts requiring more than 2,000 tokens. The scheme continued until February 1996, when Pricewatch shifted Esso’s appeal towards lower petrol prices. Token earning ended on 14 February, though gift redemption continued for a limited period.
Why It Mattered
Nearly a decade of operation made Tiger Tokens and their gift catalogues a familiar part of British forecourt culture. The promotion linked routine petrol spending to a choice of household goods, entertainment and equipment, giving motorists a reason to think beyond the fuel itself. Its replacement by Pricewatch marked a clear change in forecourt competition: Esso moved from accumulated rewards to an appeal built around lower petrol prices.
1. How Tiger Tokens Worked
- Customers generally received one Tiger Token for every £6 spent on fuel at participating Esso stations.
- Each token counted as seven pence towards gifts but had a statutory cash-redemption value of 0.001p.
- The £6 threshold was intended to change the habit of buying petrol in £5 multiples and remained unchanged as fuel prices rose.
- Tokens from different participating stations could be combined, with a clearing house settling transfers between issuing and redeeming sites.
2. Catalogues, Gifts and Token Designs
- Participating stations were expected to stock lower-value gifts, while more expensive rewards could be ordered.
- Launch rewards included a china mug for three tokens and an electrical extension cable for 75 tokens.
- The promotion was relaunched as the “New Esso Collection” on 1 June 1987 with redesigned tokens and a larger gift range; existing tokens remained valid.
- Surviving vouchers show tiger imagery, identifying numbers, barcodes, printed conditions and the 0.001p cash value, but the photographed designs cannot be assigned securely to particular years.
3. Pricewatch, Closure and the Court Case
- Esso launched Pricewatch nationally on 17 January 1996 after regional trials tested different combinations of tokens and lower prices.
- Customers could continue collecting or topping up Tiger Tokens until 14 February 1996.
- The North-East trial suspended tokens and matched the lowest local petrol price, an approach that informed the national Pricewatch programme.
- In 2003, the Commercial Court held that relevant licence agreements required participating station licensees to bear the promotion’s costs, while individual assurance claims were left for separate proceedings.
