Defining Feature

Small retail stores selling electronics, devices and components

Status

Historical retail operation through its 2015 Chapter 11 filing; bankruptcy alone does not establish that the RadioShack brand became defunct.

Overview

RadioShack put electronics, cables, batteries and components inside thousands of small local shops.

Founded in 1921, the chain sold both name-brand and private-label goods. Its network included locations in malls, strip centres and individual storefronts across the United States.

RadioShack reported 4,297 company-operated US stores at the end of 2013. RadioShack Corporation and its domestic subsidiaries filed Chapter 11 petitions on 5 February 2015, with an agreement proposing the sale of 1,500 to 2,400 stores.

Why It Mattered

RadioShack gave consumers a nearby place to solve the physical problems of technology by finding the right plug, battery, adapter, wire or replacement component. Its dense store network made specialised electronics locally accessible before online retail made obscure parts searchable from home.
