Overview
Are You Afraid of the Dark? gathered the Midnight Society around a campfire to share a different frightening story each week.
Created by D.J. MacHale and Ned Kandel, the children’s horror anthology originally ran from 1992 to 1996 before returning from 1999 to 2000.
Each episode moved from the familiar group in the woods into a new tale of ghosts, monsters or the supernatural.
Why It Mattered
The programme trusted younger viewers with stories that could be genuinely eerie without abandoning the pleasure of telling them among friends. Its campfire opening turned separate tales into a shared ritual, making the words “Submitted for the approval of the Midnight Society” part of the experience.
