Overview

Microsoft released Windows 95 on 24 August 1995 amid midnight shop openings and customer queues.

The redesigned desktop placed the Start button and taskbar at the centre of opening programs and moving between them. Plug and Play support was another promoted feature.

For many households, the interface became the recognisable face of the personal computer as the public internet changed expectations of what a home PC could do.

Why It Mattered

Windows 95 made an operating-system upgrade feel like a major cultural event rather than background computer maintenance. Its Start button and taskbar shaped later versions of Windows, while the boxed-software launch demonstrated the growing public importance of the home computer.

Desktop Interface

  • Microsoft’s 1995 guide describes the taskbar as a program launcher and task switcher.
  • The guide presents the Start button as a faster route to programs for new users.
  • Microsoft’s launch record also identifies Plug and Play support as a Windows 95 feature.

Midnight Retail Launch

  • Microsoft dates the launch to 24 August 1995.
  • Its corporate record documents midnight store launches and customer lines around the world.

First Anniversary

  • Microsoft announced an interactive online anniversary event for 24 August 1996.
  • The anniversary release described Windows 95 as the company’s most popular operating-system product at that point.
