Gmail-integrated sharing of updates, photographs, links and conversations

Status

Discontinued - Retired in 2011; preserved as an early Google social-networking experiment

Overview

Google Buzz brought social updates, photographs, links and conversations directly into Gmail in February 2010.

It used Google’s existing contact and communication infrastructure. Its initial automatic connections prompted complaints during the rollout about disclosure, consent and control over personal information.

The United States Federal Trade Commission charged Google with deceptive privacy practices connected to the launch. Google announced Buzz’s retirement in October 2011, and support documentation remains for retired Buzz content.
