Tetley Tea Folk promotional figures, including the Music Stars collection

Status

Preserved - Gaffer and Archie Music Stars figurines are catalogued by Stockton Libraries

Overview

Tetley Tea Folk were the tea-loving characters from British adverts, later seen as collectable figures.

The seven-character cast comprised Gaffer, Sydney, Maurice, Clarence, Gordon, Tina and Archie. Collectable figures brought characters from the television adverts into physical merchandise.

The Music Stars sub-line included figurines of Gaffer and Archie, who was Gaffer’s nephew. These two examples are attributed to Lyons Tetley in Greenford; the wider collectible range’s production dates remain unclear.

Why It Mattered

The figures gave viewers a small physical version of a character they knew from the tea adverts. They extended a long-running advertising cast beyond television and into branded merchandise.

Advertising History

  • Tetley Tea Folk was the name of Tetley’s seven-character advertising property.
  • A report published in August 1997 said the Tea Folk had been television advertising stars for 24 years, so 1997 was not their origin date.

Music Stars Figurines

  • Stockton-on-Tees Libraries separately catalogues Music Stars figurines of Gaffer and Archie.
  • The catalogue identifies Archie as Gaffer’s nephew.
  • Both catalogued figurines are attributed to Lyons Tetley in Greenford.

Range Boundaries and Brand Distinction

  • The exact distribution method, complete range and individual production dates remain unestablished.
  • Marketplace photographs of miniature buildings and ornamental teapots provide supporting visual references but do not establish a complete range.
  • Red Rose states that its separate Wade figures began in 1967 and became recurring inclusions in American Red Rose Tea packages.
