Overview
Hielocos were small Coca-Cola figures exchanged for bottle caps and one peso in Mexico in 1997.
The first collection offered 60 moulded-plastic characters that could be frozen and put in drinks. Five crown caps or two screw caps plus one peso bought a sealed packet containing two figures and a card.
A second 60-figure football collection followed in 1997. Together, the two waves distributed about 90 million figures. The promotion also reached Colombia, with further Hielocos campaigns documented in Mexico and Buenos Aires in 1999. These were temporary promotions rather than a permanent toy range; the two documented 1997 exchange periods ended on 30 May and 30 June.
Why It Mattered
Hielocos transformed ordinary Coca-Cola bottle caps into a collecting ritual, encouraging children to save, exchange and redeem them for colourful figures. The scale was remarkable: the two documented Mexican campaigns of 1997 distributed approximately 90 million figures.
The promotion became part of late-1990s childhood culture in Mexico, combining television advertising, playground swapping and limited-time collections. Its surviving figures, cards and unopened packets preserve a form of soft-drink marketing built around physical rewards and repeat purchases.
Mexican Campaign Timeline
- The first precisely dated Mexican campaign ran from 1 February to 30 May 1997.
- Hielocos Futboleros began on 12 May 1997, overlapping the first wave before its own redemption period ended on 30 June.
- The football collection contained 60 figures and drew on interest in the Copa América.
- Coca-Cola FEMSA recorded another child-directed Mexican Hielocos campaign in 1999, but did not give its formal name, figure count or exact dates.
Distribution and Campaign Credits
- Each documented 1997 wave distributed 22.5 million sealed packets, with two figures in each packet.
- McCann-Erickson was Coca-Cola’s advertising agency for the documented Mexican campaign, while PPI supplied the promotion.
- The individual figure designer, sculptor, plastics manufacturer and card illustrator have not been identified.
Regional Reach and Edition Identity
- By February 1998, Coca-Cola Colombia had distributed 12 million figures and was extending its campaign.
- Coca-Cola FEMSA recorded a Hielocos launch in its Buenos Aires territory in 1999.
- A later Colombian reuse of the Hielocos name was a separate promotion, not evidence of uninterrupted global production.
- The selected photograph shows the Hielocos Alien series rather than the original 1997 generation; the series’ release date remains unresolved.

The promotion outlasted the soft drink. These surviving Hielocos Alien figures show why the characters became collections people kept long after the bottle caps were spent.
