Overview
Terry’s Bitz combined chocolate with flavoured crisp pieces, giving each bite another taste and texture.
Mint crisp was one version: its wrapper described a chunky blended chocolate bar. Other varieties paired chocolate with orange and cherry bits, offering different combinations under the same short name. The pieces were part of the bar itself rather than a separate filling to discover.
The range was documented in British food-survey material in 1997, but its exact launch date remains unclear. It no longer appears in Terry’s displayed range, leaving these bars as a different part of the brand’s history alongside Chocolate Orange.
Why It Mattered
Small crisp pieces gave one chocolate-bar format several distinct identities. Mint, orange and cherry changed both flavour and texture while keeping the same Bitz name and recognisable wrapper design. The surviving range shows a side of Terry’s product development beyond the much better-known Chocolate Orange.
The bar
- An undated wrapper directly records a 50g bar with “chunky blended chocolate with mint crisp”.
- The wrapper also refers to crisp pieces with natural mint flavour.
What the 1997 record says
- The National Diet and Nutrition Survey food-coding material associated with 1997 fieldwork includes Bitz entries.
- Its descriptions include a milk-chocolate bar with orange and cherry bits, and a plain-and-milk-chocolate bar with mint bits.
Dating and Withdrawal
- The securely dated 1997 survey record establishes that Bitz was documented by then; it does not establish the launch year or date the surviving wrappers.
- Bitz is absent from the Terry’s range in the saved Carambar & Co. source. The evidence does not establish a precise withdrawal date or the reason for discontinuation.

Mint, orange and cherry wrappers preserve the flavour-led appeal of Terry’s Bitz. Crisp pieces gave the chocolate its selling point, even as the range’s wider history became harder to trace.
