Overview
ClubCall offered British football supporters club-specific recorded information through premium-rate phone lines.
Promoted in match programmes and on Teletext, it offered news, interviews, specialist features and match reporting or commentary around the clock. Callers paid by the minute. Former-staff reporting dates its launch under British Telecom to 1986; a West Bromwich Albion programme documents it in 1988.
Although 0898 became strongly associated with ClubCall, lines also used 0891. Early advertising identifies BT Supercall and British Telecommunications plc, while iTouch acquired the Clubcall brand and other interactive voice-response assets in 2001.
Why It Mattered
Its significance lay in making immediate, club-specific football information available before websites, apps and mobile alerts became standard. Supporters could hear fresh updates and commentary through an ordinary telephone, but the per-minute format also made attention itself the product; former staff later recalled calls leading to unexpectedly large household bills.
The adverts, cards and Teletext pages now capture a once-mainstream route to football news, while the absence of a comprehensive public audio archive leaves much of the listening experience fragmentary.
Numbers and Call Charges
- West Bromwich Albion used 0898-12-11-93 in 1988, Birmingham City used 0898 12 11 88 in 1993 and Luton Town used 0891 121 123 in 1996–97.
- A 1991 advert stated 33p per minute at the cheap rate and 44p at other times.
- The 1996–97 Luton Town advert stated 45p per minute off-peak and 50p at other times.
Provider and Ownership
- A 3 March 1991 advert identifies BT Supercall as the provider and Clubcall as a British Telecommunications plc service mark.
- In October 2001, iTouch acquired Clubcall and other interactive voice-response brands from Thus as part of a reported £3.5 million transaction.
Promotion, Competition and Preservation
- Preserved Teletext material includes ClubCall pages from 1992 and multi-club line advertising from 1995.
- TEAMtalk had its own Teletext presence and was a competing football-information service, not another name for ClubCall.
- Programme adverts, Teletext pages and wallet cards preserve numbers, prices and promotional claims, but the surviving public record is weighted towards advertising rather than audio.
