Overview
Fansland Cinema was a specialist public cinema and film club at 84 Lý Thường Kiệt in Hà Nội.
It grew out of a March 1993 music-film festival and opened on 1 December 1994, screening international classics, music films, art cinema, Vietnamese films and selected newer releases.
Weekly Sunday discussions explored directors, themes and technique. The cramped room became known for hard wooden seats and forceful stereo sound before its final public screening, Some Like It Hot, on 31 March 2008.
Why It Mattered
Fansland gave Hà Nội audiences access to international classics, Vietnamese cinema and specialist films that were otherwise difficult to encounter in one place.
Beyond the screenings, its Sunday discussions brought film enthusiasts together to explore directors, storytelling and cinematic technique. The modest room became a gathering place where watching films was only part of the experience.
Founders and the Fansland Name
- Engineer and film enthusiast Nguyễn Quang Dũng, known as Dũng Digital, was Fansland’s leading founder.
- Architect Nguyễn Hoàng Phương helped decorate the club and proposed its name.
- The name combined “fan” with the “-land” construction associated in the founding account with Disneyland, Wonderland and the Beatles’ Pepperland.
Programmes and Sunday Sessions
- Published schedules list films including Casablanca, The Piano, Star Wars, East of Eden and Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door.
- Fansland also showed Vietnamese films, European art cinema, music films, award-winning works and selected newer commercial releases.
- Its specialist Sunday sessions discussed directors, themes, meaning, authorial style and cinematic technique.
The 1993 Stereo Precursor
- Fansland developed from a music-film festival held at 84 Lý Thường Kiệt in March 1993.
- The festival used an imported stereo-reading component and was later remembered as an early stereo-film landmark, but a national first has not been established.
- Tuổi Trẻ places the stereo demonstration on 25 March, while Nhân Dân places the associated Terminator 2 demonstration on 26 March.

By 2004, Fansland remained part of Hanoi's cinema-going culture, drawing audiences to the Military Cinema Club for films that offered an alternative to the city's mainstream screenings.
