Overview
Trash Bag Bunch was Galoob’s 1991 toy line of painted miniatures revealed by dissolving bags.
Series one contained 36 figures: 18 anti-pollution Disposers and 18 pollution-making Trashors. Each concealed figure came in a rubbish-bag-like pouch placed in lukewarm water, where the pouch dissolved and an effervescent tablet fizzed.
Galoob catalogues documented a second series and the Grip ’n Dip play set. The original retail line is discontinued, though licensed XL vinyl interpretations later revived selected characters for collectors.
Why It Mattered
The excitement of discovering an unknown figure became as important as the toy itself. Dissolving pouches and fizzing tablets turned an ordinary purchase into a small experiment, making surprise and anticipation central to the experience.
The opposing Disposers and Trashors also reflected the environmental themes of early-1990s children's entertainment, transforming pollution into a battle between colourful miniature characters.
How the Concept Came Together
- Mel Birnkrant originated the Garbage Bag Gang merchandising premise; Galoob combined it with pre-existing robot, alien and monster figures and developed the final name, soluble pouch and tablet.
- Galoob commissioned Daryl Cagle to produce the packaging artwork.
- Later licensed material identifies Jim Fong as one of the original designers and sculptors, rather than the sole creator of the range.
Assortments and International Sales
- Wave 1 figures are marked © 1991 L.G.T.I. and stand approximately 2½ inches tall.
- Galoob catalogue material documents the line in 1992 and 1993; the 1993 catalogue is identified as international-sales material.
- Collector research reports distribution in Spain through Famosa in 1992.
- Individual character numbers and some spellings differ between collector checklists.
Later Licensed Revival
- The original Galoob retail line was discontinued, but no dated cancellation announcement is known.
- Later licensed activity used enlarged vinyl interpretations of selected characters rather than relaunching the original retail range.
- A licensed Trash Bag Bunch XL Skuzbeast campaign ran from 17 March to 16 April 2023 and reached its funding goal.
