Discontinued - original organiser postponed all events indefinitely in October 2013

Overview

Run For Your Lives turned a 5K obstacle race into a chase between runners and costumed zombies.

At its October 2011 debut in Darlington, Maryland, runners wore belts with three flags and tried to finish with at least one still attached. Reed Street Productions later promoted a twelve-market schedule.

In October 2013 the organiser cancelled an event and postponed the series indefinitely. Human Movement Management proposed replacements, and one hastily rebuilt race went ahead in the Phoenix region that November amid a disputed handover.

Why It Mattered

The zombies were not merely decoration around an ordinary run: by taking flags, they could determine whether a runner counted as a survivor. At the 2012 Maryland event, a Zombie Transformation Center offered theatrical make-up, making the transformation into a zombie part of the experience. Running from the monsters and playing one were both ways to take part.

Origins and Planned Expansion

  • Ryan Hogan’s later biography dates the co-founding of Reed Street Productions to 2010, before the first documented public race in 2011.
  • The organiser claimed that the inaugural race attracted more than 10,000 participants and spectators combined; the figure was not independently audited.
  • The early-2012 expansion announcement listed twelve prospective markets, including Toronto. It was not a count of completed races.

Awards and Event Records

  • On 30 March 2012, Reed Street Productions won the $15,000 first prize and $2,500 People’s Choice award at the seventh Cupid’s Cup business competition.
  • Joshua Kruger’s photograph page dates the Baltimore-labelled Zombie Transformation Center image to 27 October 2012; the precise venue is not established.
  • Obstacle Racing Media identifies a 2013 Georgia edition and a film showing behind-the-scenes make-up activity; the complete film and audio were not reviewed.

Cancellation and Contested Handover

  • The October 2013 notice cancelled the purchased event, postponed all Run For Your Lives events indefinitely and directed customers to contact their banks for a full refund. It does not establish that every customer received one.
  • Human Movement Management announced replacement events for existing ticket holders, but the announcement does not prove that every proposed race occurred.
  • A firsthand chronology places the Phoenix-region replacement race on 2 November 2013. Its reporter estimated more than 2,000 runners and described a course under three miles with seven obstacles.
  • Reports recorded conflicting accounts of the replacement operator’s control of assets and communications; no inspected contract or court finding resolves the dispute.
