Overview
Dickens World was an indoor attraction in Chatham that turned Dickensian London into a walk-through show.
Inside, visitors moved through lamplit mock streets with costumed performers, a Great Expectations boat ride and a 4D show. The entrance ran through a gift shop, while a central food area sat within the dark, night-time setting.
It opened in May 2007. By June 2013 it had become an approximately 90-minute guide-led experience, with visitors walking the former boat route, and it closed in October 2016.
Why It Mattered
A fictional city could become a place to explore. Dickens World used staged streets and encounters with performers to translate the atmosphere of the novels into a visitor experience. Its appeal lay in entering that imagined world and taking part in a scene.
From Proposal to Themed Interior
- Medway Council recorded a proposal for a Dickens-themed attraction beside the Factory Outlet Centre at Chatham Maritime by 1 May 2002.
- A four-acre scheme described in April 2005 credited Gerry O’Sullivan-Beare with the original concept, RMA with developing and managing the themed interior work, and Kemp Muir Wealleans with the shell and core.
- The announced £60 million figure covered a wider leisure complex containing Dickens World, a cinema, restaurants and bars; it was not a verified construction cost for the attraction alone.
Opening and Operating Changes
- An opening announced for 20 April 2007 was postponed after a problem with the 4D show; 25 May is the best-corroborated public opening date.
- A visitor account dated 5 June 2013 documents the approximately 90-minute guided format and visitors walking through the former boat-ride route, but not when that format began.
- Pre-opening trade reporting named Continuum Group as the intended operator. Later reporting associated Dickens World Ltd and Britannia Entertainments Ltd with the attraction, although the complete company chronology is unresolved.
Closure and Reuse
- On 12 October 2016, ITV found the doors locked when Dickens World was due to open; council minutes later that month described the closure as sudden.
- The operating closure is documented, but no specific administration, liquidation or other corporate mechanism has been established.
- By 2018, council planning material described the former attraction floor space as vacant and proposed its subdivision for other leisure and restaurant uses. Separate cinema, restaurant and gym uses elsewhere in the building were not the attraction itself.
Sources & Records
Medway Council report on the proposed Dickens World site (2002)
Records a proposal for Dickens World beside Chatham Maritime’s Factory Outlet Centre by May 2002. This establishes a proposed attraction, not its completion or opening.
Medway Council minutes on Dickens World’s closure (2016)
Records councillors discussing the sudden closure on 25 October 2016, support for former employees and the absence of known plans for the building. It corroborates closure without establishing a particular insolvency process.
Former Dickens World and Chatham Maritime representation
Council-hosted property representation. Only PDF page 162 was inspected. It distinguishes the vacant attraction space from restaurants and a gym elsewhere in the building. Accessed 2026-10-22.
Medway Council planning report MC/18/1522 (2018)
Describes the attraction space as vacant after its 2016 closure and proposes dividing it into new leisure units with a restaurant extension. The report distinguishes this space from other businesses already occupying the building.
Medway Council planning report MC/14/0939 (2014)
Separately identifies the attraction, restaurants, cinema and gym in the proposed planning conditions. It helps distinguish Dickens World from the wider leisure complex; this document is an officer report recommending approval, rather than the final decision notice.
