Overview
Original BAWLS Guarana is a caffeinated, carbonated US soft drink launched in Miami in 1996.
Its cobalt-blue glass bottle, covered in raised dots, made it recognisable by touch as well as sight. The company linked its early story to LAN-party players, while reports from 2005 and 2008 show that it was sponsoring gaming events.
Hobarama’s management crisis in 2009–10 did not end the drink. By 2021 the brand was operating from Ohio, and Original remains in the BAWLS range.
Why It Mattered
A custom 12-pack for CompUSA placed BAWLS inside a specialist computer retailer, while event sponsorship brought it directly into gaming spaces. Together, those choices gave a soft drink a route to customers through the shops, tournaments and gatherings of 2000s gaming culture.
Origins and Launch Timing
- Hoby Buppert developed the BAWLS business plan through a Cornell independent study and decided in October 1995 to pursue it after graduation.
- Hobarama accounts place the South Beach launch in autumn 1996. A trademark-data reproduction lists 9 December 1996 as one “Date of First Use”, but neither record establishes the exact first-sales day.
- BAWLS was not the first guarana drink marketed in the United States: Josta and other guarana-derived drinks were already being reported before its launch.
Packaging and Surviving Presentation
- In 2006, Hobarama introduced a 16-ounce can using spot-applied foaming ink to reproduce part of the glass bottle’s raised-dot texture.
- A 2007 BAWLS advertisement showed the bottle, can and broader product line, documenting the brand’s visual presentation at the time.
- The approved photograph shows a 296 ml English/French-labelled bottle photographed in 2009; it is not verified as the original 1996 US launch packaging.
Restructuring and Continuity
- Chief executive Hoby Buppert and chief operating officer Christina Staalstrøm left Hobarama in December 2009 amid investor-led management changes.
- Reports in January 2010 described creditor-led restructuring, cost reductions, possible sale discussions and continuing distributor orders; they did not establish bankruptcy or brand closure.
- In March 2010, secured investors planned to fund another production run and transfer the BAWLS intellectual property.
- By 2021, BAWLS Acquisition LLC identified Twinsburg, Ohio, as its headquarters and described continuing US retail and online distribution.
