Overview

Johammer J1 was an Austrian small-series electric motorcycle with mirror displays and unusual front steering.

Developed around Johann Hammerschmid’s Bad Leonfelden operation, it put rider information in two mirror-mounted 2.4-inch colour displays. Its recyclable polypropylene bodywork formed a single-material shell. The motorcycle had its public premiere at Motorrad Linz in February 2014.

J1.150 and J1.200 versions were advertised with stated ranges of up to 150 and 200 km. Its later production and official service status remain unclear.

Why It Mattered

At a glance, the J1 turned routine riding information into part of its appearance. Placing speed, range, motor and battery temperature readouts in the rear-view mirrors made the interface inseparable from the motorcycle’s unfamiliar form. That made this Austrian small-series machine a distinctive attempt to give electric motorcycling its own visual language.

Construction and Steering

  • A low aluminium centre frame housed battery and suspension components, with the electric drive at the rear.
  • The J1 used an unconventional front steering arrangement.
  • Its bodywork was described by Red Dot as recyclable polypropylene mono-material construction.

Mirror-Mounted Information

  • Two 2.4-inch colour displays were integrated into the rear-view mirrors.
  • The displays showed remaining range, speed, motor and battery temperatures, time and trip data.
  • The dashboard was therefore distributed across the mirrors rather than placed in a conventional central instrument cluster.

Variants and Early Offer

  • Period reporting listed the J1.150 with an 8.3 kWh battery and a stated range of up to 150 km.
  • The J1.200 was listed with a 12.7 kWh battery and a stated range of up to 200 km.
  • These were advertised range specifications, not directly comparable like-for-like test results.
  • At the February 2014 Linz premiere the J1 was orderable; an April report described initial deliveries as planned, while a 2016 interview said one unit had been sold in 2014.
