Overview

Chrysler’s PT Cruiser wrapped a modern compact car in bodywork inspired by earlier American motoring.

Its tall roof, broad arches and upright grille gave it a shape that stood apart from the smoother cars around it. The ornamental body design had already been recorded in a Chrysler patent.

Chrysler reinforced the car’s identity with a large catalogue of Mopar accessories, encouraging owners to personalise the PT Cruiser further.

Why It Mattered

The PT Cruiser made styling the main event. Whether people loved or disliked its retro appearance, it was immediately recognisable, while the accessory programme encouraged buyers to treat the car as something to customise rather than merely transport.

Vehicle-Body Patent

  • US design patent D413,081 covers the ornamental design for a vehicle body.
  • It was filed on 31 March 1998 and granted to Chrysler Corporation on 24 August 1999.
  • The patent presents front perspective, side, rear perspective, front and rear views.

Credited Design Team

  • The patent credits Bryan Nesbitt, Steven W. Ferrerio, William A. Dayton and K. Neil Walling.
  • Its claim is limited to the ornamental vehicle-body design shown and described.
  • Wheels and tyres shown in broken lines are excluded from the claimed design.

Mopar Accessories Catalogue

  • The Canada Science and Technology Museum catalogues an illustrated 11-page Mopar PT Cruiser 2002 accessories booklet.
  • The catalogue identifies DaimlerChrysler Canada Inc. as manufacturer and gives 2001 as the earliest production date.
