Overview

Worms: The Director’s Cut was Team17’s 1997 Amiga AGA reworking of the original Worms.

Published by Ocean for the Amiga 1200 and 4000, it added weapons, cavern levels, movement changes and customisation tools. Graffiti mode let players draw a level directly on screen with the mouse, without a separate graphics program.

Team17 later described it as an Amiga farewell. Wakefield Museum reported a playable display in November 2025, and creator Andy Davidson discussed a downloadable expansion in August 2026.

Why It Mattered

Graffiti mode put terrain creation inside the game itself, allowing players to shape their own battlefields. Davidson also recalled that the project gave him room to explore new weapons and gameplay ideas while Worms 2’s PC engine was being developed.

The AGA Edition

  • Team17 developed The Director’s Cut exclusively for Amiga AGA, with Ocean as publisher.
  • Team17 describes it as a redevelopment of the original Worms, adding weapons, cavern levels, movement tweaks and customisation tools.

Graffiti and Sequel Ideas

  • Graffiti mode allowed a level to be created by drawing directly on screen with the mouse pointer.
  • Andy Davidson later recalled that the project began as an AGA upgrade before becoming a place to explore ideas and weapons for a sequel.
  • The Director’s Cut was developed alongside the PC-exclusive Worms 2, initially focused on a new engine and online play.

Later Displays and Expansion

  • Wakefield Museum reported on 27 November 2025 that visitors could play The Director’s Cut in an interactive display.
  • A downloadable Director’s Cut expansion project was made available in 2026 and credits Andy Davidson and Ben Paddon as curators, coordinators and producers.
  • The expansion page lists more than 40 levels, more than 50 sample packs and ten DIY terrains.
