Orange Wednesdays

Forgotten Trends · 2003–2015

Published

Orange Wednesdays was a British mobile promotion launched on 26 November 2003. Customers requested a reference number by text message and presented it at participating cinemas to receive two tickets for the price of one on Wednesdays.

Why It Mattered

The offer linked mobile-phone membership to a recurring leisure habit rather than a one-off discount. Its simple weekly ritual influenced cinema attendance and survived the Orange-to-EE transition before ending on 25 February 2015.

Announcement and Rollout

- Announced on 26 November 2003 as a planned three-year Orange and UK film-industry partnership. - The consumer-facing promotion launched in late March or early April 2004. - The 2003 announcement and 2004 public rollout refer to stages of the same scheme.

Redemption Method

- By 2007, customers texted “FILM” to 241 for a unique reference number. - The reference number was used at a participating cinema on a Wednesday for two tickets for the price of one. - Terms varied over time, including venues, exclusions, formats and advance-booking conditions.

Reach and Continuation

- Campaign reported participation at more than 94% of UK cinemas in 2007. - The offer was renewed in 2007 and extended to registered Orange internet customers. - It continued as EE Wednesdays following the Orange/EE brand transition before its final day on 25 February 2015.
