Tesco Computers for Schools

Forgotten Trends · 1992–2009

Published

Tesco Computers for Schools was a Tesco-led UK school-voucher promotion launched in 1992. Shoppers collected paper vouchers for registered schools, which redeemed them against a dedicated range of computer-related and educational equipment. The standalone UK identity continued into the 2000s campaign and was combined into Tesco for Schools & Clubs for 2009. Its suppliers changed over time: Acorn had a prominent early role, while RM became the official computer-equipment supplier for the 2000 offer.

Why It Mattered

It made acquiring school technology into a familiar retail-and-school collection ritual, turning everyday shopping into a shared effort to obtain equipment. Schools in weaker Tesco catchments could collect far fewer vouchers than better-sited schools, a concern raised by TES.

Voucher Mechanics

- In 1994, Tesco issued one voucher per £25 spent during a ten-week collection period from 18 April to 26 June. - By 2006, Tesco described the later mechanic as one voucher per £10 spent in a single transaction. - Supporters donated vouchers to registered schools, which redeemed accumulated totals against the equipment catalogue.

Equipment and Suppliers

- The offer included more than complete computers: Acorn’s 1994 scheme material also refers to software and other educational items. - Acorn’s 1994 release identifies Acorn hardware alongside equipment supplied through Thomas Nelson and Cumana. - RM was appointed official computer-equipment supplier for Computers for Schools 2000; its announcement said the offer would include Apple computers.

Collection Scale and Access

- TES reported in 1995 that an Acorn A3020 multiscan system required 2,000 vouchers, equivalent to £50,000 of qualifying spend at that year’s £25 voucher rate. - TES also reported that vouchers could be carried into the following year. - Education reporting from the scheme period raised concerns that schools in weaker Tesco catchments could collect fewer vouchers than better-sited schools.
