Golden Wonder Wotsits Wafflers

Forgotten Food & Drinks · 2000

Published

Golden Wonder launched Wotsits Wafflers in the UK in 2000 as a spin-off from its established Wotsits range. Instead of the familiar curled shape, Wafflers consisted of much larger, curved pieces formed into a distinctive waffle-like grid.

The original version was sold in Cheesy Flavour and received a reported £1 million in launch support. Television adverts were running by August 2000. Surviving packaging preserves the product’s distinctive name, shape and cheese-flavoured identity. Later bacon-flavoured snacks sold under the Wafflers name were separate products released after ownership of Wotsits had changed.

Why It Mattered

Wotsits Wafflers showed how far Golden Wonder could stretch one of its best-known snack brands without merely adding another flavour. The oversized lattice pieces made shape, scale and crunch the product’s identity, turning an established corn snack into a recognisably different spin-off.

That experiment also marks the closing years of Golden Wonder’s ownership of Wotsits. Later bacon-flavoured products reused the Wafflers name, but the original cheese version remains a distinct example of the brand’s early-2000s product experimentation.

Product Format

  • Wotsits Wafflers replaced the familiar Wotsits curl with large corn snacks formed into a curved waffle-grid shape.
  • A review described individual pieces as warped 3-by-4 grids measuring approximately 1¾ by 2 inches (about 4.4 by 5.1 cm).
  • The reviewed pieces measured approximately ⅜–¾ inch thick (about 1.0–1.9 cm) and curved through roughly 45–90 degrees.
  • The same reviewer found them harder than a conventional cheese puff but slightly softer than a crunchy cheese curl. These measurements and texture comparisons are observations rather than manufacturer specifications.

Original Cheesy Flavour

  • The surviving Golden Wonder product was identified as Cheesy Flavour.
  • A partial packet transcription lists maize, vegetable oil, potato powder and cheese flavour.
  • The packet was described as suitable for vegetarians, although its complete ingredients, allergen and nutritional declarations have not been recovered.

Launch and Later History

  • The Grocer covered the Wotsits Wafflers launch on 22 April 2000, including £1 million in launch support.
  • Surviving Golden Wonder packaging provides physical evidence of the original cheesy Wafflers product.
  • The Wotsits brand transferred to a Walkers-related company in 2002; later bacon-flavoured Walkers and Smiths Wafflers were separate from the original Golden Wonder Cheesy Flavour product.
