Fructal Pingo

Forgotten Food & Drinks · 1985–1990s

Published

Fructal Pingo was a 0.2-litre fruit drink sold in Slovenia in a flexible pouch with an attached straw. Fructal made the pouch at its Kamnik operation. A surviving example is reported to bear a 1985 production date, but Pingo’s exact launch year is unknown. The pouch disappeared around the beginning of the 1990s. The Pingo name survives on different Fructal products, not as a continuation of the original format.

History

History

The pouch disappeared around the beginning of the 1990s. The Pingo name survives on different Fructal products, not as a continuation of the original format.

Significance

For Slovenian children, Pingo became a familiar part of school excursions and packed lunches. Its small foil pouch, attached straw and colourful branding made it a recognisable childhood drink. Piercing the flexible packaging without spilling the contents became a frequently recalled experience. Although similar drinks pouches existed elsewhere, Pingo's particular identity and association with school trips gave it a lasting place in Slovenian nostalgia.

Dating the Pouch

- Fructal’s Kamnik operation opened in 1980, but that year is not established as Pingo’s launch date. - At least two surviving pouches have been reported as carrying 1985 production dates. - The attached-straw package reportedly remained available until around the beginning of the 1990s; no precise withdrawal date is known.

Brand Changes and Later Formats

- In 1999 Fructal consolidated individual juice brands beneath the Fructal identity, after the old pouch had disappeared. - The Pingo name remains active on different Fructal formats, including 1.5-litre, 1-litre and 200-millilitre products. - Official 2025 promotional rules listed one-litre Retro Pingo products; these were not the historical doypack.

Origin and Attribution

- Slovenia is supported as the country of origin, with Kamnik documented as the doypack production site. - Distribution of the exact attached-straw pouch outside Slovenia is not established. - No individual product developer, package designer, illustrator or straw supplier has been identified. - The original formulation, flavours and number of package-art variants remain unresolved.
