Overview

Tazos began as a Sabritas and PepsiCo snack promotion in Mexico before expanding internationally.

In Britain, Walkers distributed the circular collectible discs inside crisp packets during 1996. Their artwork, point values and slotted edges supported collecting, trading, games and connected shapes.

The principal UK collection contained 110 numbered pieces: 50 Looney Tunes Tazos, 20 World Tazos and 40 Monster Munch Tazos. Two unnumbered Walkerman pieces and a plastic Mega Tazo slammer sat outside that total.

Why It Mattered

Tazos combined snack promotion with numbered collecting, licensed characters and slotted discs that could be joined into shapes. An official album gave the British set a defined goal, while some Taz designs were distributed through Doritos rather than ordinary Walkers packets.

Marketing Week reported sales of approximately 1.1 million collector’s albums, demonstrating the scale achieved by the 1996 promotion.

Origins and British Promotion

  • Tazos began as a Sabritas and PepsiCo snack promotion in Mexico before expanding internationally.
  • Walkers Snack Foods, part of PepsiCo, ran the principal British promotion in 1996 across Walkers, Doritos and Monster Munch packets.
  • The collectibles were small circular printed discs with multiple slots around their edges.
  • Printed numbers and point values supported collecting and informal games.

The Numbered UK Collection

  • The principal 1996 promotion contained 110 numbered Tazos across four releases.
  • The 50 Looney Tunes Tazos were numbered 1–50; Taz designs 21–30 were distributed through Doritos.
  • Twenty World Tazos portraying historical and cultural figures were numbered 51–70.
  • Monster Munch supplied 30 Series 1 designs and 10 Series 2 designs, numbered 1–40 across the two series.

Additional Items and Later Campaigns

  • Two unnumbered Walkerman Tazos and a plastic Mega Tazo slammer were associated with the promotion but excluded from the numbered 110.
  • Marketing Week reported that approximately 1.1 million collector’s albums were sold.
  • Later campaigns used subjects including Star Wars, Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh! rather than extending the original collection.
  • Loose discs, Walkerman pieces, slammers, storage tubes and completed albums remain in private collections.
