Overview
Pokémon Red and Blue’s live-action “Bus” commercial turned the games’ collecting premise into a visual trick.
In the 30-second English-language upload, a driver stops to gather Pokémon aboard a bus. Pikachu is shown at the open door before the packed vehicle enters a crusher; it then opens as a Game Boy containing the creatures.
France got a different ending. Its advert finishes with an invitation to join Club Pokémon and Nintendo’s French website, while the English version returns to the driver and “Gotta catch ’em all.” The bus-and-crusher sequence is shared, but the clips are not the same edit.
Why It Mattered
The commercial makes the Game Boy the destination of the collecting process. Pokémon enter a full-size bus, the bus is crushed, and a Game Boy is revealed with the creatures inside. The sequence turns apparent destruction into a reveal, making the portable format the punchline.
The Bus-and-Crusher Sequence
- Later retrospective accounts describe a driver gathering Pokémon onto a bus before it enters a crusher.
- The crusher reopens to reveal a Game Boy containing Pokémon, according to accounts from Kotaku and P-Nintendo.
- The supplied material does not establish whether a real bus was used or physically crushed during production.
Launch Context and Local Versions
- Wired reported that Nintendo’s US Pokémon marketing push began at E3 in Atlanta on 29 May 1998, before the North American game release.
- Pokémon Red and Blue reached North America on 28 September 1998; that date does not establish the advert’s first transmission.
- French coverage places a bus-driver advert in 1999, while Italian coverage places a version in the late-1999 launch context; their relationship to the English-language edit is unresolved.
Credits and Later Reception
- Gail Tilden described forming Nintendo of America’s Pokémon brand group in early 1998 to coordinate agencies and rights holders, but did not identify the maker of this commercial.
- INA catalogue record PUB1280021022 is a lead for a French “Game Boy Pokémon: The Bus!” advert; its contents, date, runtime and credits were not directly examined in the supplied capture.
- Kotaku’s description of the commercial as “nightmare fuel” records later commentary, not a documented complaint or controversy from 1998–1999.
