Mobil Unit Penerangan vans brought film, recorded sound and public information to Indonesian crowds.
By November 1950, Kementerian Penerangan was operating them in Jakarta with a documented installation that included a film projector, gramophone, records, portable screen, amplification equipment and loudspeakers.
They later supported election information in Yogyakarta and rural film distribution. The vehicle class did not vanish with its original hardware: the MUPEN name continued with newer audiovisual and public-address technology, while the 1950 configuration was gradually superseded without a known nationwide withdrawal date.

Significance
In the early years of independent Indonesia, mobile information units brought films, recorded sound and public announcements to communities beyond conventional cinemas and fixed broadcasting facilities.
They provided a flexible way to communicate with public gatherings and rural audiences, including during election campaigns. As technology changed, the vehicles continued serving a similar purpose, preserving the idea of taking information directly to the people.
The 1950 Equipment Set
- ANRI catalogue entries dated 29 November and 2 December 1950 separately list the van, records, projector, projector motor, gramophone, amplification equipment, portable screen and loudspeakers.
- The catalogue does not identify the vehicle manufacturer, chassis, coachbuilder, projector model, film gauge or gramophone make.
- The photographed installation is a documented configuration, not a proven standard carried by every MUPEN vehicle.
Crowds, Elections and Village Screenings
- On 16 November 1950, ministry staff used a microphone from van B 4869 as a crowd gathered in Jakarta; the programme itself is not identified.
- On 29 September 1955, a MUPEN vehicle explained the general election to people in Yogyakarta, although its complete equipment set is not specified.
- Government accounts for 1982/83 and 1984/85 describe village film circulation, open-air screenings, audiovisual equipment, and land and water mobile information vehicles.
A Service That Changed Its Hardware
- A 2018 family-planning information vehicle supported an outdoor film event in Desa Godo with a generator, LCD projector, large screen, amplifier and sound system.
- In July 2023, MUPEN units gathered in Banyuasin for a BKKBN communication, information and education service event.
- BKKBN reporting also describes modern MUPEN work using audiovisual presentations and travelling loudspeaker announcements.

The MUPEN name survived after celluloid and gramophones disappeared: this 2023 BKKBN roadshow used modern vehicles for film screenings, public information and health outreach.
